Small Steps, Big Impact

The City of St. Louis needed to improve their recycling participation with their residents and businesses. The city partnered with Brightside St. Louis to create a solution to improve participation and engagement, and to provide alternative recycling resources for items that were not recyclable through the city’s system.

Alliance Systems partnered with Brightside to create an integrated communication and education platform, with a new brand and logo, and a website that was the focal point for the campaign. An information architecture process identified key messaging and calls to action. A vital component of the site is a database-driven application to allow residents to easily find alternative recycling options for items that don’t go in their bins such as batteries and paint. We also created a way for residents to take a recycling pledge and to become an Ambassador for their neighborhood.

The St. Louis City Recycles program has been a huge success with greatly improved community awareness and engagement. Nearly 2500 residents have taken the “Take the Recycling Pledge” and hundreds have become neighborhood Ambassadors. And the database makes it very easy to find alternative recycling resources, with hundreds of businesses and organizations participating.
